New Publication: Revel and Collaborators Publish Research on Reversing Protein Aging

Why Revel: How we think about aging

Only long-lived things age. In the body, that means structural molecules — which accumulate damage in many forms: oxidation, glycation, crystals, aggregates, and amyloids.

At Revel, we prioritize these forms of damage and show they are reversible. Cellular approaches to longevity do not address the underlying damage mechanisms we are targeting.

As we develop these first-in-class therapies, we follow a three-step path:

  1. Identify what damage builds up in us as we age.
  2. Prioritize the most harmful forms.
  3. Build a drug to reverse it.

Revel and Collaborators Publish Research on Reversing Protein Aging in Nature Communications

Revel Pharmaceuticals and its collaborators have published a landmark study in Nature Communications titled "Reversal of protein chemical aging by enzymatic deglycation."

The paper demonstrates that enzymatic deglycation — the removal of glycation adducts that accumulate on proteins over time — can meaningfully reverse a well-characterized form of molecular aging. Glycation, the non-enzymatic attachment of sugars to proteins, is implicated in a broad range of age-related conditions including cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and diabetes complications. Until now, this damage was largely considered irreversible.

This work validates a central premise of Revel's platform: that nature has already evolved the enzymatic tools to repair molecular damage, and that those tools can be identified, optimized, and deployed as therapeutics. The collaboration reflects shared scientific conviction that aging can be addressed at its chemical roots.

Revel Pharmaceuticals Closes $12M Seed Round to Advance Enzymatic Repair Platform

Revel Pharmaceuticals has closed a $12 million seed financing round, bringing together a group of investors who share our conviction that aging is fundamentally a chemistry problem — and that enzymes evolved by nature offer the most precise path to solving it.

The proceeds will be used to advance Revel's core platform: a systematic approach to identifying rare enzyme variants from across the natural world that recognize and reverse specific forms of molecular damage. Unlike small molecules or biologics that manage symptoms, Revel's enzymes are designed to address root causes — clearing the toxic accumulations of amyloids, crystals, aggregates, and chemically modified proteins that accumulate over decades and drive disease.

The round was supported by Kizoo Technology Ventures, LongGame Ventures, Starbloom Capital, Karl R. Pfleger, Gaingels, Gaingels Healthcare Fund and other well-known angels — investors with deep conviction in longevity science and the potential for biology-first approaches to age-related disease.

With this financing, Revel is advancing lead programs targeting gout, skin aging, and eye disease, while continuing to build out its foundational discovery engine.

Revel Pharmaceuticals Secures $3.8M in Non-Dilutive SBIR Funding

Revel Pharmaceuticals has been awarded approximately $3.8 million in Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants from the National Institutes of Health. This non-dilutive funding has supported our early-stage platform development and enabled us to advance the science of enzymatic reversal of age-related molecular damage from hypothesis to validated proof-of-concept.

SBIR grants are highly competitive awards given to small businesses conducting high-quality research with significant commercial and societal potential. Receipt of multiple SBIR awards reflects the strength and originality of Revel's scientific approach — identifying and engineering naturally occurring enzymes that can reverse the specific forms of molecular damage underlying age-related disease.

This funding has allowed Revel to build its screening infrastructure, establish key disease models, and generate the data that underpins our ongoing therapeutic programs in gout, skin aging, and eye disease.
